In 2019, we commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. It created the conditions for building a democratic society in the former Czechoslovakia and in Slovakia. It ended a forty-year period of a political regime that called itself socialist but is commonly referred to as “communism.” This is because the pre-November regime was based on the monopoly of a single political party—the Communist Party. Its “leading role” was enshrined directly in the constitution, and it exercised its power unchecked, in a dictatorial manner.
